ILOILO CITY – It is not in the program of Duterte government to solve the poverty being experienced by majority the people.
This was the statement of Bayan Panay after the continuous attack of the fascist military and police forces against human rights defenders under the directive of Duterte’s Executive Order No. 70.
Last February 5, Engr. Jennefer Aguhob was arrested in Misamis Oriental due to fabricated murder case. Aguhob is a paralegal and national council member of Karapatan as well as a member of Union of People’s Lawyers in Mindanao. She’s also a graduate of law and is now waiting for bar exam result this year.
At the dawn of February 7, the offices of Katungod Sinirangan Bisayas and RMP Eastern Visayas were raided, wherein 5 human rights defenders including a member of alternative media in Tacloban City were illegally arrested.
According to Karapatan, the offices were forcibly entered. While they were sleeping, they were forced to move out of the room and when they get back inside, a display of arms and grenade, which were planted by the police themselves, were seen.
The warrants were only shown to them after the incident, Karapatan added.
Among arrested were Frenchie Mae Cumpio of alternative media, Eastern Vista, Mira Legion of Bayan EV, Alexander Philip Abinguna of Katungod SB, Marissa Cabaljao of People’s Surge, and Mariel Domanquill of RMP.
Condemnation on the incident was echoed by different progressive groups and members of alternative media.
According to Bayan-Panay, it is not in the vocabulary of the Duterte government to solve poverty brought by his administration in the first place. Bayan added that as long as anti-people policies like TRAIN Law, Rice Liberalization Law, and the backing for bureaucrat-capitalists and corruption, continue to exist, the people will never stop demanding accountability for Duterte’s crimes.
In a statement of Reylan Vergara, vice chairperson of Karapatan, de facto Martial Law indeed exists with the implementation of E.O 70, wherein Duterte wants to obliterate insurgency through mobilizing and all government agencies to restrict those considered enemy of the state and to silence those who fight against his oppressive policies.
However Duterte was wrong on this, Vergara added, because as oppression intensify, the people’s struggle and willingness to fight will also grow stronger.
Bayan and Karapatan challenged the people to resist Duterte’s tyranny, push for the junking of E.O. 70, and echo the call to oust Duterte from his position./PT
