ILOILO CITY – Different groups in Iloilo held a mobilization last February 25, 2020 to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
The group started the program outside the station of ABS-CBN Iloilo before marching off to Plazuleta Gay as they honor and continue the memory of the “Bloodless revolution” that toppled the Marcos dictatorship in 1986.
According to Reylan Vergara, Karapatan National Vice Chairperson, “We were able to bring about democracy, and craft the 1987 Philippine Constitution that afforded the people their rights particularly the freedom of expression”.
For Justin Madriaga of Anakbayan Panay, the youth is taking lessons from the people who offered their lives in taking down the Marcos dictatorship because the masses are still facing crisis under the Duterte regime. Instead of providing attention to the problems of the country the government has become its root source and even adds to the crisis.
The youth under Anakbayan Panay called to the people to continue fighting the anti-people programs and policies of the Duterte regime. Furthermore their group believes that a dictator like Marcos and Duterte, will only be defeated through the people’s united strength and struggle.
Madriaga added that the struggle and cause of EDSA is not yet over, instead, it continues until now because of the oppression and killings under the Duterte regime./PT
