ILOILO CITY – The broader masses strongly condemned the Senate Bill 1083 or the Anti-terrorism Act of 2020 passed in the third and final hearing of the Senate last February 27, 2020.
Senators Riza Hontiveros and Kiko Pangilinan were the only ones who voted against the bill, which will only violate the basic rights of the people.
Based on the bill, the military and police forces are given the authority to freely arrest someone even without a warrant, to conduct surveillance, wiretap, and detain anyone suspected as terrorist for 14 days and may be extended for 10 more days.
In a statement by the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL), the bill will only violate the Constitution, wherein the basic rights of the people to express, organize, and join in mobilizations were stipulated.
NUPL further added that the bill scrapped the 500,000 peso per day penalty to an authority wrongfully detained a person for terrorism, the reason why impunity will only escalate since the guilty will no longer be penalized.
According to Makabayan Bloc, the bill don’t have any other intention but to silence and stop the resistance of the people by calling them terrorists, just like what the current administration is doing towards progressive groups and even to them who are in Congress.
The bill will also give Duterte the authority for his fascist and tyrannical rule, BAYAN said.
On the other hand, Senator Pangilinan said that country will only be under martial law if the bill will be passed.
NUPL challenges the people to oppose and stop the passage of the said bill, since it will only attack our democracy and the people./PT
